Participatory Culture
What is a participatory culture?
The collaborative and shared practice of knowledge production and sharing is at the core of participatory culture. Today an example of participatory culture would be an influencer sharing an interest on TikTok or Instagram, like a makeup tutorial; for example.
“Outside the classroom, children learn by gathering
clusters of information as they move seamlessly between their physical and
virtual spaces.”
How can you embrace the best of participatory culture into everyday practices of your classroom/schooling?
I could use videos by Super Beast or another popular You-tuber that children are familiar with to reward them with. I would also remind the students that they too can make videos on youtube about the things they enjoy and find interesting. I think it would be fun to have students make videos about things they think are interesting if we had iPads in the classroom available. It would be similar to show and tell, but instead of showing an object the students would show/explain an interest.
I love the idea of students making their own creations and sharing them. You said this would be like "show and tell"! I imagine my 4th grade students would LOVE that! They haven't done show and tell for a few years now and would love an opportunity to share the creative part of themselves with others. I've never heard of Super Beast but will definitely look them up now. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteUsing popular youtubers would be a great way to have students be engaged in learning! It would connect to their interests and also encourage creativity.
