Technology in the Classroom

Image
When I was a student we rarely used technology in the classroom. It was always so exciting when we saw that the TV on the cart was rolled in so we could watch the movie of the book we had just finished reading as a class. Now I feel like teachers use technology every day. Things like gamification of learning, automated assessments, adaptive learning, and mobile learning have emerged. Technology allows students to learn in  new ways and create using different resources like minecraft.edu, for example. Also students who may need extra help can use resources in technology. I love that different technologies make school more exciting for students and they can get immediate feedback from quizzes and tests. I also appreciate that assessments can seem less scary for student's, because of the technology being used. It is up to the teacher to assist students with technology. Technology is ever changing so it is important to help students find helpful resources that can benefit them. I think...

Participatory Culture

Image
What is a participatory culture?  The collaborative and shared practice of knowledge production and sharing is at the core of participatory culture. Today an example of participatory culture would be an influencer sharing an interest on TikTok or Instagram, like a makeup tutorial; for example.                                     “Outside the classroom, children learn by gathering             clusters of information as they move seamlessly between their physical and                                                                         virtual spaces.”   How can you embrace the best of participatory culture into everyday ...

Mid-Term Reflection

Summary   The article expresses that technology is a helpful resource in many areas in our lives, but it is best to monitor children's use. It touches on the goldilocks effect, which states that there is “ just right” amount of screen time for children that won't hurt them. It is important to know the different types of technologies and the unique ways they impact a child. There are ways that educators can monitor the use of technology. Having a whole-school approach to technology safety concerns and partnering with families are just two of the ways that the article listed.  Insights, Lessons Learned, and Takeaways  I believe that technology can be very beneficial for a child under the right supervision. I appreciated the way this article explained co viewing and the importance of it. Co-viewing can bring up important conversations instead of the child looking something up and being led to a dangerous site, for instance.  My Questions What will technology look like i...

The Difference Between Ordinary Experience and "An" Experience from Dewey's Perspective

Image
John Dewey distinguishes between experience in general and "an" experience . Experience occurs continually, as people are always involved in the process of living, but it is often interrupted and inchoate, with conflict and resistance. I believe it's true that students should learn through experience, not just sitting and listening. "An" experience is when students are able to think more in depth and deeper about an idea. In Dewey's book the example of students realizing that plant seeds can be spread by animals and then thinking more about birds, dogs and cats differently an idea is started. Ideas start action. When you go to the zoo you know what to expect, and because of that there aren't many new ideas. You can learn a lot from the plaques by the exhibits and how the animals walk and interact with their same breed. But it's probably true that not many new ideas are sparked from the learner at the zoo. A trip to the zoo is an experience Conve...

Wise Integration of Technology

Image
The SAMR model has four steps to it; Substation, Augmentation, Modification and Redefinition.  Substation is the sense that technology is used to substitute something. For example a student could type onto a Google Doc instead of a piece of paper or use a quiz format to take a quiz through an app. Augment is the stage that allows technology to increase or help the learning experience for students. For example, students could find a recourse like a video to add to, or augment,  their presentation. Substation and Augment are both stages of enhancement, while Modification and Redefinition are transformation stages.  Modification is the stage that goes from augmenting to transforming. Instead of using a video in their presentation a student would create a video themself or a graphic to add to their presentation. Redefinition is the final stage in the model and it is how technology can change the students' experience. The students could use technology to communicate about a ...

Kozma vs Clark

Overall this was an interesting debate to learn about. Clark says, “Instructional media are mere vehicles that deliver instruction but do not influence student achievement any more than the truck that delivers our groceries causes changes in our nutrition" (p 445). Whereas, Kozma believes "the learner strategically manages the available cognitive resources by extracting information from the environment and integrating it with information already stored in memory" (p.179).   Kozma explains how different types of media affect the learner in unique ways.      Initially I didn't think much about what side I would take, because it was obvious to me that technology influences learning in so many ways. Technology is used everywhere for almost everyone. It is widely used for educators to communicate with their learners and employers with their employees. However, once I dove more about this debate I started thinking more about Clarks ...
